Question

2circles_line
Hello Bob

1. AutoCAD 2009
2. I work in Qualcomm and we use AutoCAD to generate our documents in autocad mostly from DXFs exported out from Cadence tools.
3. I am mech engineer so I learnt this tool in school since 2002. I am not an expert but can handle things with ease.

My problem -

1) My current set of objects consist of many circles in a rectangular array of which 2 are joined by a line(i have it center-to-center) but thats not compulsory. I just need to see which circles are connected.
2) I save it as dxf and import dxf in cadence. There i see which 2 circles are connected by a line and then manually have to click on the two circles to tell cadence tool that these two circles are connected.

Question -

Is there a way that I can do away with the manual clicking of 2 circles which are connected by a line? I mean, if we make the circles blocks and also make the line a block, and then the line(say line 1) can read it connects circle number (e.g) 24 and 25 and can spit out this data in text form? The text file will then have coordinates of the 2 circles(since circles are blocks - data extract) and some way to tell that line1 is the connection between them? If I can save such a text file then I can import that into cadence directly without the circles and lines (cadence has ability to build circles and lines of its own) and I dont have to worry about clicking thru circles which are as high as 1500 (so that 1500 clicks saved everytime!)

I dont know if I have been clear enough. but please let me know if you need more clarification. i can send some dwg files and/or images to explain further.

thanks a lot!

Answer
Hi--

Thanks for providing almost complete information -- the "almost" is that I can't quite get the point of the significance of the line and circles.
At any rate, sorry, I am an Interior Designer and have neither need for, or familiarity with, Cadence. I have only used dxfs when I drew lighting, and needed them to send to the laser cutting shop.
Thus, I think you might waste your time to try to explain it to me better, and even if it were appropriate to send me files (it isn't), I am not a guru on ALL things CAD, sorry.

My best suggestion is for you to pose the question in a forum for Cadence --- it is really a Cadence question, because you are asking for a text print from the Cadence result. Also, discussion groups or support in your particular industry would put you in touch with people who understand your work. It might be useful to post on an Autodesk group, if you decide which one, and indicate in the post title that you are making dxfs for Cadence.

If you were talking "all work done in AutoCAD", not importing it from the other, I might have some suggestions, but I am at a loss here. I hope you find better help from someone who understands electronic drawings.

Expertise

I am good at helping Architects and Interior Designers who are intimidated by Autocad, ADT, etc. to feel comfortable, get things done. If you are in another field, I will do what I can for you. PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW MY INSTRUCTIONS TO QUESTIONER-- MOST DON'T FOLLOW THEM, AND IT MAKES IT VERY HARD TO ANSWER WELL-- THANKS
