Question
Hi,
A friend of mine (student) has been using autocad 2005 and wants to upgrade 2010 but has had the menus customised by another friend (who no longer is his friend!)  (Complicated?).

Anyway the question I have is how does he convert the customised menus to work in 2010?
Is there a step-by-step process?

I don't know anything about autocad but offered to help(!)... many thanks in advance.

Ken

Answer
Hello Ken,

For several releases now, Autocad has had a feature to import old menus into the newer version.  It happens when you install the software and use it the first time.

Your friend also might just want to use the menus that come with 2010 and see if he really needs the custom menus his old friend once created for him.

There is quite a bit of information available on the internet about customizing menus but, bear in mind, since about version 2007, the menu structure has changed quite a bit.  Some think the newer system is easier to use and some think it's terrible.  Have him do some reading up on the cui interface (the new Autocad menus system) and check into customizing it.

My last piece of advice is to learn to use Autocad without custom menus, it'll be less of a handicap if he goes to an employer that uses standard menus and doesn't allow customization.  Easier for all the workers to be on the same page than to have different menus on every machine.

Hope that helps,

Paul
