Question
Bob:
I am an employed architect working for a state university and work with Autocad 2009. I have recently agreed to do a freelance project and need my own autocad program. Someone suggested Autocad LT. I do not want to spend more than 300 or 400 dollars for this one endeavor. Can you suggest where I can look for such a program and should I fear ads that say 'box has never been opened' I also found something called GstarCad? I do not want to spend time learning a different program. Any suggestions?

Answer
First, I would stay away from ????CAD
1-- your time to learn it counts
2-- your files might not be OK for subcontractors, planning dept, etc.

Second, check out LT on the Autodesk website, and be sure there is nothing you want missing from this simpler version. (There should not be)

Third, you fail to give the duration of your project. If it is quick, you can download a trial AutoCAD and use it, but I doubt that 30 days will do you.

I have to be careful about advising you on bargain purchases. MAYBE someone has overstock on older LT, and it's fine -- not my job to take the time to check them out. I may have another idea or two, if you care to message me your phone #.
