AutoCAD/purchasing and learning autocad

Question
Hi,
I am an experienced interior designer who does many of remodels.  I unfortunately do all my drafting plans and elevations manually - they didn't offer autocad at the time I graduated.
I would like to learn, but do not know where to begin? Could you recommend whether I should purchase the program ( where?) and self-teach or enroll in a class ( however I cannot devote years to this)- do you have a recommendation for classes in Orange County - CA?
Is there a place where I could use the program for a fee?
thank you

Answer
Hi--

First, I am sort of the blunt guy, I dont waste your time making it pretty.

Go to Autodesk.com and look at the products for Archtecture.

I think that before you learn AutoCAD (or maybe Revit), you should assess the value of your time to do so, how many years you plan to work, etc. Frankly, this is a question you might better have addressed already. Since you did not, I am going to guess to treat you as a "somewhat reluctant learner", lacking more facts.

Perhaps you should have recent grads or advanced student do your computer work, perhaps it is right for you to learn. I cant assess that from here.

As for schooling, you could pay for tutoring, or take classes at a good community college. (I went to UCLA Extension) You can download free student versions from Autodesk if you are in school -- but it would be foolish to do so, as they cannot be used for your work. I would ask other designers about their local school experience. Avoid for-profit colleges, but check out classes offered by dealers.

For interiors, if you do not have the "head" to design in 3D, AutoCAD LT is cheaper and plenty. AutoCAD Architecture and Revit Architecture are both great, but different.

I consult with designers. If you are open to considering me, send your phone # to me -- the email address is my name (no space) @aol.com.

I hope this gets you thinking toward the right path.
