Question
QUESTION: Dear Sir. How can I translate a BMP file with a logo to vector in ACAD 2010? I would like to transfer the BMP logo into a DXF file..

Best regards
Leif

ANSWER: Leif:
If you are using full AutoCAD (not AutoCAD LT, the referenced image file will produce a better print than a vectorized version of the image.  However, you can buy/download software that will do a conversion.

Beware:  Remember that "free download" does not mean "free software".  That just means you don't get charged before you download it.  But if you want to actually use it, you may get charged.

The ones below are purported to be free:

ftp://download1.geocomm.com/sd2/BMP2DXF.ZIP

http://www14.big.or.jp/~vow/soft/index.shtml

http://www.wintopo.com

http://www.industrycommunity.com/myf...ssages/62.html

The ftp URL might not show up as a link.  You can copy and paste it into the address window of your browser.

Good luck.

QUESTION: Thank you very much. I through that ACAD had something built-in to do the job, but from your answer, I realize that's not right....

Answer
Leif:  You are very welcome.  AutoCAD has a DXFOUT, which acts like a SAVEAS DXF.  It doesn't vectorize an image.  What I have done in the past is to attach an image and draw over the top of it in order to get the basic shapes in vectors.  I would make sure I closed areas that needed to be closed, and then I was apply solid hatches to areas that were filled in the image.  I do that much less now that AutoCAD seems to print/plot a referenced image so well in the drawing, that vectorization hardly ever needs to be done anymore.

Expertise

I can address all 2-D questions and some 3-D questions. I do programming in AutoLISP if it doesn`t involve solid modeling. I can also address menu customization issues and can help you find answers to questions I can`t answer by taking your question directly to Autodesk via their newsgroups.

Experience

I used to do electronic and mechanical design for a flat panel monitor manufacturer, and now I do architectural drafting for an architect. I did and do AutoLISP and menu customization and take pride in making my lisp routines to do the work exactly the way the client likes them done.

Publications
I had a routine published in CADENCE magazine (no longer in publication and taken over by CADALYST). Some of my routines are published on my website at http://my.sterling.net/~bdeshawn
