Experience I've been in the 3D/2D CAD industry for over 10 yrs. & also had the opportunity/exposure to work with several mainstream design platforms including Helix Design Systems to Land Desktop.
Question QUESTION: When I pick a menu item I frequently have to click on it several times before it is recognized. Clicking quickly or holding the mouse button down for a second or two has no obvious effect. This problem was present on an old platform running Windows 98SE and also occurs on an entirely different (hardware) system running XP.
ANSWER: My apologies for the delay...How did this happen? is it ongoing? or it happened after an install/upgrade? does this computer have the min. requirement to run Autocad? does it have the most current service pack? pls let me knw.

QUESTION: Thanks for your reply. This problem has been ongoing ever since I upgraded from AutoCAD LT to LT2000 on a platform running Windows 98SE about five years ago. About a year ago I re-installed the LT2000 on a new computer running XT and the problem was still there. Although the problem appears like a mouse with an intermittent pick button, I'm sure this is not the case because it has occurred with at least four different mice. Both computers have more than enough system capacity to run AutoCAD and I installed the latest XT Service Pack about three weeks ago. I don't know if this is significant but the LT2000 was purchased as an upgrade for a copy of LT which was purchased as a full version. I know it's time to upgrade to a newer version but aside from this one irritating problem, what I have does everything I need and I'm getting too old to get a thrill out of learning to use new software. I realize you have many more important things to address so if there is no obvious explanation for my problem, please feel free to just tell me to go away.
Answer Pete, go away!!! Just kidding, I'll try to help u out as much as i can, we'll get this thing resolved. assuming we have all the driver updates done for both your hardware (graphics card) & software (Autocad Service Packs), we can focus more underneath the Autocad platform. One item we can do is to reload our menus, if u havent done so yet. Im thinking your menu is corrupted somehow.
On the command line type 'menu' & reload your 'acad.mnu' file (you may have to search for it. Normally located under
C:\Documents and Settings\ [Your Profile Name]\ Application Data\ Autodesk\ Autocad 200X \ enu\ Support
On the Select Menu File dialog box, set the Files of type drop-down list to "Menu Template (*.mnu)" so you can see the full list of un-compiled menus.
Important Note:
Recompiling your acad.mnu overrides (erases) previously loaded customized menus. If you customized any menu before this will have to be reloaded too, including your express tools. Do this by invoking the 'menuload' command & recompile the rest of those *.mnu.
Hope this helps, let me know if it has any improvements. Also, if u can, lower your Screen Resolution to 800 x 600 & color quality in your windows display settings. Run autocad & see if menus r still acting funny. Just let me know, have a good day!
