Question
Hi Bill,

Actually, the microsoft Intellimouse wheel doesn't work at all.  The Troubleshooter button on the Mouse Properties is completely greyed out - the whole tab is - so not just and AutoCAD problem now....  Have checked the zoomfactor and mbuttonpan too just in case but no joy.  Have tried all the suggestions on the Microsoft support site but still nothing.
Thanks very much anyway for your help anyway - I appreciate any suggestions!
Fiona

Hi Bill,

Thanks ever so much for your replies.  Unfortunately I'm still having problems.  I've now bought a Microsoft Intellimouse and selected the microsoft driver and selected in the Current Pointing Device in the options but the wheel is still not zooming, and now isn't panning either!  Is there anything else I could do to make it work?!

Thanks again for all your advice,
Fiona

Question -
Hi Bill,

I am running AutoCAD LT 2002 but although the middle button (wheel) on my mouse pans around ok, it doesn't zoom in and out when moving it forward and back.  Can I customize AutoCAD to do this? - all other computers I've used in the past seem to do it automatically....
Thanks!

I need more information:
What kind of mouse?  If it is a mouse in the Microsoft Intellimouse family of mice, it should be no problem whatsoever.  Only make sure that the Current System pointing device is selected in the Curren Pointing Device Option.
If it is a Logitech mouse, you will have to use the Microsoft Intellimouse drivers to make it work right in AutoCAD.  Logitech drivers don't work right in AutoCAD.  One should never spend the money to use the Logitech mouse if they have AutoCAD, unless they already know that they have to use the Microsoft Drivers.

Fiona:
DLB had the same problem.  Here is his solution:

Luckily the Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer comes with a troubleshooter than allowed me to fix the problem automatically.  I don't know if any of the other mouse' have the same type of program, but for anyone using the Intellimouse, just go into your mouse software, and click the wheel tab.  Then click the Troubleshooter button, and it will let you know from there.  Very simple fix, and it worked instantly.

Try that, and if that doesn't work, I'll present your problem to the Autodesk newsgroups.  Also make sure your MBUTTONPAN system variable is set to 1 and your ZOOMFACTOR system variable set to something like 60.

Answer
Well, now that we know it's not an AutoCAD problem, we are now out of my territory.  However, I suggest that you completely uninstall the Intellimouse software, and then reinstall.  Not that I promise it will work, but it's just the next step in the long road to a solution.  If it doesn't work, then in Internet Explorer, type the following URL.
news://msnews.microsoft.com
Outlook Express will open up and you can download a list of newsgroups from the server at that URL.  I suggest you subscribe the the following newsgroup:
microsoft.public.win2000.hardware
or
microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics

As a participant of newsgroups, you can read / respond to questions and answers from many other users of the usenet newsgroups or you can post your own questions.

Expertise

I can address all 2-D questions and some 3-D questions. I do programming in AutoLISP if it doesn`t involve solid modeling. I can also address menu customization issues and can help you find answers to questions I can`t answer by taking your question directly to Autodesk via their newsgroups.

Experience

I used to do electronic and mechanical design for a flat panel monitor manufacturer, and now I do architectural drafting for an architect. I did and do AutoLISP and menu customization and take pride in making my lisp routines to do the work exactly the way the client likes them done.

Publications
I had a routine published in CADENCE magazine (no longer in publication and taken over by CADALYST). Some of my routines are published on my website at http://my.sterling.net/~bdeshawn
