AutoCAD/Autocad Insert with Xref's

Question
I am trying to insert in a drawing several files with xref's overlaied within them. When I insert the file it created a blank block reference using the name of the overlaied reference file. When I go to insert the file that was xrefed on the previous inserted file it will not load as it is already a blank file. If I try and load it from the disk and tell it to over-write it the program goes into a loop until it runs out of memory. I am stuck leaving the xref'd files overlaied due to the way the files are used and can't attach them which would solve the problem. Can you think of a solution? I am using 2002

Thanks
Lee

Answer
Lee:
You can get rid of the referenced block name by making sure the blocks are all erased, and then purge them with the PURGE command.

When the block name is no longer referenced, the XREF of the same name may be attached.  If the block name doesn't purge after you have erased them, that means that you have nested that block name within another block and it's the biggest mistake you can make in CAD drafting.

Expertise

I can address all 2-D questions and some 3-D questions. I do programming in AutoLISP if it doesn`t involve solid modeling. I can also address menu customization issues and can help you find answers to questions I can`t answer by taking your question directly to Autodesk via their newsgroups.

Experience

I used to do electronic and mechanical design for a flat panel monitor manufacturer, and now I do architectural drafting for an architect. I did and do AutoLISP and menu customization and take pride in making my lisp routines to do the work exactly the way the client likes them done.

Publications
I had a routine published in CADENCE magazine (no longer in publication and taken over by CADALYST). Some of my routines are published on my website at http://my.sterling.net/~bdeshawn
