AutoCAD/Copying a line to another layer

Question
Hi Bill

I'm trying to export some DWG files into ArcView, but have run into a problem.  One of my layers in the DXF shares text and lines.  ArcView only sees the text and imports it to another layer, leaving the line behind.

How do I create a new layer in the DWG and move my line to it in the same location?

Cheers mate
Tom

Answer
Copy using the _copy command using any point (say 0,0) as a base point and the same point as a destination point.  Now you have two selection objects:  a previous and a last.  The previous is the one you just copied.  The last is the new line.  Since the last has the topmost draworder, you can preselect the line by placing the cursor over the top of the line and clicking once with the mouse.  If GRIPS is set to 1 and PICKFIRST is set to 1, then the line will highlight and if the object is indeed a line, it will have 3 grips (one for each end and the midoint).  While the line is highlighted go up to the Properties toolbar in the menu (usually at the top of the drawing editor) and in the Layer Properties Window click the correct layer name.  The line will then be place on that layer.  Hitting ESCape will cause the Grips to disappear and the line to be dehighlighted.

Expertise

I can address all 2-D questions and some 3-D questions. I do programming in AutoLISP if it doesn`t involve solid modeling. I can also address menu customization issues and can help you find answers to questions I can`t answer by taking your question directly to Autodesk via their newsgroups.

Experience

I used to do electronic and mechanical design for a flat panel monitor manufacturer, and now I do architectural drafting for an architect. I did and do AutoLISP and menu customization and take pride in making my lisp routines to do the work exactly the way the client likes them done.

Publications
I had a routine published in CADENCE magazine (no longer in publication and taken over by CADALYST). Some of my routines are published on my website at http://my.sterling.net/~bdeshawn
