AutoCAD/Freelance Work

Question
I have a question pertaining to doing CAD work on the side, like say a few hours a week, as a supplement to a full time job.  How do you know what you should charge per hour?  I have a neighbor who started a structural engineering firm recently with his friend and he needs someone to do some drafting work (autocad).  I would not be doing engineering, only putting the stuff in the computer.  He told me to let him know how much my hourly rate is, or how much I charge per job.  I never did work on the side, so I don't know how much I should be charging (I'm just guessing between $40-60?, I have no idea).  A little about my background:  I currently work as a CAD technician/IT Administrator for a civil engineering firm, and have been a CAD technician for about the past 10 years in various firms including architectural and structural.  I really don't remember a whole lot from structural, but could put stuff easily into the computer.  I want to not only be fair to him in what I charge, but also to myself, since I would be doing this in addition to a full time job.  Also, do I have to worry about taxes, and should that affect what I charge?  Thanks very much for your help.

Answer
A clip from Craigslist in LA -- where I was checking for some work this morning...................
Successful Interior Designer looking for part-time architect. Kichen design, residential mill work, AV/ Audio equipment, custom furniture and knowledge of CAD a must. Looking for architect with a good sense of style and knowledge of modern and historical properties. Will pay $45.00 an hour for drawings and job site meetings ...............
This is for an architect with design skills and client skills.  Typical architects make less than you are asking, in full time jobs. ($60 per hour is >$100,000 per year)
SORRY __I would say you are at something like double the going rate for drawing -- plus you will need extra time to understand what you draw, if you have not been in his field.
You should check with AUGI or other CAD user groups in your local area, to see what the common rates are. Perhaps people who are really terrific, and lightning fast, command this rate. Some areas, like LA, might be a bit depressed due to a plethora of immigrants and students.
As far as taxes -- he should provide you with a 1099. If you work at home, you may be able to deduct part of your office, then report this as a side business doing drafting -- but, of course, I cant give tax advice.
Another thought: charge the rate you mention to TEACH him AutoCAD.
Good luck
