Experience I've been in the 3D/2D CAD industry for over 10 yrs. & also had the opportunity/exposure to work with several mainstream design platforms including Helix Design Systems to Land Desktop.
Question I have a question pertaining to doing CAD work on the side, like say a few hours a week, as a supplement to a full time job. How do you know what you should charge per hour? I have a neighbor who started a structural engineering firm recently with his friend and he needs someone to do some drafting work (autocad). I would not be doing engineering, only putting the stuff in the computer. He told me to let him know how much my hourly rate is, or how much I charge per job. I never did work on the side, so I don't know how much I should be charging (I'm just guessing between $40-60?, I have no idea). A little about my background: I currently work as a CAD technician/IT Administrator for a civil engineering firm, and have been a CAD technician for about the past 10 years in various firms including architectural and structural. I really don't remember a whole lot from structural, but could put stuff easily into the computer. I want to not only be fair to him in what I charge, but also to myself, since I would be doing this in addition to a full time job. Also, do I have to worry about taxes, and should that affect what I charge? Thanks very much for your help.
Answer Dave,
Personally, i'd do a research on how much a seasoned cad tech make per hour in your city (structural field). In my area, around $20/hr. Now, since your gonna be working w/ out benefits & not to mention the taxes, i'd probably add an additional 15-20% on top. Typically, these guys will work with you if they see quality, accuracy, & speed in your work. Capitalize on small opportunities like this, who knows what the future holds. Good luck!
