Question
If I have a drawing with say 10 layers (A to J), and I want to view a particular combination, say only layers A,B,E,F in a view, how can I save the view as well as the layer combination?

What has been happening, is if I save a view (say View1) with layers A,B,E,F on, at some point later on, if I have all layers on, and select View1, then I get View1 with all the layers on.

I guess what I want is to have not only a specific view saved, but the actual layer combination that the view was saved as. I'm using ACAD 2006.

Answer
This is one of the uses of paper space.  In a layout, bring in your title block, create a viewport (say, with MVIEW), Go into the viewport and window in the area you want to see, then zoom relative to paper space.  If paper space scaling is to be equal to model space scaling, then zoom - 1xp in the paper space viewport.  Pan to center the objects in the viewport, and before zooming again, change to paper space and right-click on the viewport and LOCK THE DISPLAY.  If you use a tablet and puck, then use PROPERTIES to lock the viewport.  (right-clicking can get messed up with pucks).

Here's the fun part.  First thaw all layers with the layer properties dialog box.  Then with the VPLAYER command in the viewport, from the command line you can freeze layers you don't want to see.  Although all the layers are thawed, you will get the display you need via that method.

Expertise

I can address all 2-D questions and some 3-D questions. I do programming in AutoLISP if it doesn`t involve solid modeling. I can also address menu customization issues and can help you find answers to questions I can`t answer by taking your question directly to Autodesk via their newsgroups.

Experience

I used to do electronic and mechanical design for a flat panel monitor manufacturer, and now I do architectural drafting for an architect. I did and do AutoLISP and menu customization and take pride in making my lisp routines to do the work exactly the way the client likes them done.

Publications
I had a routine published in CADENCE magazine (no longer in publication and taken over by CADALYST). Some of my routines are published on my website at http://my.sterling.net/~bdeshawn
