Answer
Line types work best as layer properties, and as layer property overrides.  For example you could create a layer called HIDDEN with HIDDEN linetype properties built into the layer.  The color can be controlled by layer, too.  The line has to be long enough so that according to the LTSCALE system variable, it will display as a hidden or dashed line type.  You can override the LTSCALE (Current Line type scale) or CELTYPE (Current line type) system variables by using the PROPERTIES dialog box or pallette when an object is selected with grips.  PICKFIRST has to be set to 1 in order to do that.  In most cases CELTYPE should be BYLAYER.  LTSCALE in architecture works pretty good at about 15 when plotting at 1/4" = 1'-0" (48).  Mechanical drawings depend on paper size and experience and your own judgement.  Your own judgement plays a big part in all drawings, really.  But it's good to develop a standard to go by and refer to as you create more and more drawings.  If you work for a company, they may have their standards already established.  You only need to watch for all the settings and draw like they do.  If you decide to get serious about AutoCAD (you know - stop playing around), take some real courses at your local community college or tech school.  It will do you more good than harm.

Expertise

I can address all 2-D questions and some 3-D questions. I do programming in AutoLISP if it doesn`t involve solid modeling. I can also address menu customization issues and can help you find answers to questions I can`t answer by taking your question directly to Autodesk via their newsgroups.

Experience

I used to do electronic and mechanical design for a flat panel monitor manufacturer, and now I do architectural drafting for an architect. I did and do AutoLISP and menu customization and take pride in making my lisp routines to do the work exactly the way the client likes them done.

Publications
I had a routine published in CADENCE magazine (no longer in publication and taken over by CADALYST). Some of my routines are published on my website at http://my.sterling.net/~bdeshawn
