AutoCAD/Removing part of a drawing

Question
Autocad 2005.
I have a drawing and have used the curve tool to replace an existing sectioned curve of many segments. I would like to remove the old line with the new smooth curve but it selects the entire shape and erases it.
How do i remove only the old curve?

Answer
The terminology you are using is not that of somebody who knows what the names of objects are, as far as I can tell.  Therefore, it is my GUESS that you are talking about a POLYLINE or LWPOLYLINE.  These objects can contain straight segments and curved (arc) segments.  You can use the trim command and select the segment on each side of the one you want to remove as cutting edges, and hit ENTER and then select the segment you want to remove.  The segment in the middle should then be gone.  If I have guessed wrong, you may chastise me and throw me in the lions den.  If I survive, I will give it another shot.

Expertise

I can address all 2-D questions and some 3-D questions. I do programming in AutoLISP if it doesn`t involve solid modeling. I can also address menu customization issues and can help you find answers to questions I can`t answer by taking your question directly to Autodesk via their newsgroups.

Experience

I used to do electronic and mechanical design for a flat panel monitor manufacturer, and now I do architectural drafting for an architect. I did and do AutoLISP and menu customization and take pride in making my lisp routines to do the work exactly the way the client likes them done.

Publications
I had a routine published in CADENCE magazine (no longer in publication and taken over by CADALYST). Some of my routines are published on my website at http://my.sterling.net/~bdeshawn
