Question
I use autoCad 14 for 2d drawings and have been asked to edit blueprints. Is there a way to scan edit and save a blueprint into autocad, or is there a good program to do this ? I work in a small company we don't do much editing on other drawings.

Answer
Dan:

I've been doing this for a lot of years, and I haven't run across a good program for taking a hard-copy and turning into a work-able CAD dwg.  Yes, scanning takes a picture of the blueprint, and it can be used as a template, if desired, but it is much better to take the time to redraw the object.  Sometimes, it's even better to go back to paper drafting techniques and edit the hard copy.  The results of Scanning to CAD are nothing short of awful.  Here is one place, however, that offers a conversion service:

They have two services.  Scan to CAD and CAD "perfect" which is a completely redrawn CAD file to your specifications and layers.

Expertise

I can address all 2-D questions and some 3-D questions. I do programming in AutoLISP if it doesn`t involve solid modeling. I can also address menu customization issues and can help you find answers to questions I can`t answer by taking your question directly to Autodesk via their newsgroups.

Experience

I used to do electronic and mechanical design for a flat panel monitor manufacturer, and now I do architectural drafting for an architect. I did and do AutoLISP and menu customization and take pride in making my lisp routines to do the work exactly the way the client likes them done.

Publications
I had a routine published in CADENCE magazine (no longer in publication and taken over by CADALYST). Some of my routines are published on my website at http://my.sterling.net/~bdeshawn
