Question
Hi Bill,

MECHANICAL 2004 DX

Is there a way to choose what to display in a chosen view? For example, I have some model dims. that I don't want to show in the layout but don't want to erase from model view. It would be nice to pick and choose what views show info as well.

Thanks,
Bob

Answer
Bob:
There IS a way to do what you describe.  First Thaw and turn on all your layers.  When you are in a layout, work in a model space viewport and use the VPLAYER command.  Or you can do it from paper space and AutoCAD will ask you to select the viewport.  So, put your "model dims" on a layer that you don't want to appear in the layout.  Then when working in a layout, use VPLAYER to freeze the layers you want frozen.  Just remember that you will need to thaw all your layers first from the -LAYER command or LAYER PROPERTIES MANAGER before plotting or viewing a viewport from a layout.

If you create a new layer, it will show up in your viewport, unless you tell your viewport to freeze new layers.  That is one of the options in VPLAYER.  Keep that in mind when creating layers from then on out.

Expertise

I can address all 2-D questions and some 3-D questions. I do programming in AutoLISP if it doesn`t involve solid modeling. I can also address menu customization issues and can help you find answers to questions I can`t answer by taking your question directly to Autodesk via their newsgroups.

Experience

I used to do electronic and mechanical design for a flat panel monitor manufacturer, and now I do architectural drafting for an architect. I did and do AutoLISP and menu customization and take pride in making my lisp routines to do the work exactly the way the client likes them done.

Publications
I had a routine published in CADENCE magazine (no longer in publication and taken over by CADALYST). Some of my routines are published on my website at http://my.sterling.net/~bdeshawn
