Cannot delete/detach nested circular xref's

Can you manipulate your drawing (by turning off the XREF layers) so that only what you want is onscreen, then WBLOCK that out, creating a drawing without the xrefs (may need a lot of purging)?
Of course the xref manager changed a lot in recent releases, so I wonder if you are on an oldie, or using a newer one in an old way?  You should be able to get rid of all of them -- but it is late, and I may be talking out of my hat on that.
I have a deadline. Pls try the WBLOCK and write back -- but always give the Acad release # and your experience.
I cant stop to look up more now, but that would be useless without knowing the release.
