Question
Today my wife brought me the cheery news that her car was making a strange noise when she drove it.  What started as a ticking from a low oil level has progressed to a mechanical ticking/clunking/rattle when the car is put into a drive gear.

I added 1 qt. of motor oil to it yesterday and the valve tick disappeared only to be replaced by this terrible sound.

Any ideas what may cause the noise when the car is not in PARK?

Answer
I think you have found the cause, low oil level. How long has the car been driven with low oil?.As for when the drive is engaged it may be the transmission but theres no way to tell unless i hear it.I cannot diagnose noises over the internet,,,,too many reasons but it might be a good idea to have a mechanic look at it as it may be engine damage due to lack of oil.
