Question
Hi,
I have a 98 Subaru impreza 2.0gl non turbo. There is a smell of burning oil or rubber coming from the engine. A mechanic told me that the rear cran oil seal is leaking. Is this a major job and what can go wrong?

Answer
Yes he is correct. The rear oil seal involves removing the transmission. The smell is oil leaking on the exhaust and being burned as you drive. What can go wrong is you will need to keep putting oil in the engine and if you dont it will seize the engine.Other than that,it will make a real mess of the underside of your car.Including the exhaust and any rubber the oil comes in contact with will be ruined, bushings, etc,,,
