-----Question-----
i have several problems but the biggest is that the vehicle won't turn-over. it
starts but will not stay on. when running previously, thick white smoke would
come out and would not stop until about 10 mins into drive. please let me
know what this is..
also, how much would a compressor cost to buy and install in a '99 ford
windstar, xle (garage rates)? i need my van for work. thank you.
-----Answer-----
If that's a 2.8 V-6 you have, it sounds like blown Head Gaskets, which those
Motors were notorious for. Only a physical inspection, by an A.S.E. certified
Mechanic, will determine if that is indeed the problem. Be prepared to spend
around $700.00-$1,000.00 for the work, possibly more, if the determination
comes back that the problem is blown 'Head Gaskets.'

Answer
The engines weren't well designed, and it didn't take much in the way of heating and cooling cycles that any engine goes through, before the Gaskets would fail. I believe that since the engines originally went into production, that the aftermarket has developed better Head Gaskets, which resist blowing out as easily as the originals did. In other words, not much you could have done to prevent the Head Gaskets from blowing.
