Automotive - GMC Sierra ABS & Brake Light

Expert: Ben Deutschman - 1/27/2008

Question
I am having an ABS and Brake light illuminate on my 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4X4.  They will both come on at random times and stay on until I turn the truck off.  They always come on at the same time.  The weird thing is sometimes I can go a week without any lights and sometimes they will come on every couple days.  There isn't any difference felt in the brakes and the truck stops just fine.  Please help.

Answer
It would seem that the ABS Sensor is picking up an intermittent fault, and tripping the ABS light. It could be a damaged tooth on the Tone Ring, or a faulty Sensor, and only a physical inspection would turn up a damaged Tone Ring, the other problem would probably require a visit to a Shop, where they should be able to test the Sensors at the Wheels.
