Automotive/Power Window Problem

Question
I have a 97 VW Passat with power windows. The other day, I came to find one of the rear windows open. I'm not quite sure how or when it came down, but it was down. I tried bringing it up using the switch in the front, but there was no response. I then tried using the switch corresponding to the window(the switch on the door itself) and it still didn't budge. It doesn't make any noise, either. It's as if it not receiving power at all. The rest of the windows work perfectly fine.

How can I find out if its just a short, or if maybe the motor is bad? Also, how would I be able to just get the window up, without the functioning motor? I'm afraid my plastic bag and tape solution will not hold up during a storm.

Thank you,
Eric

Answer
Remove the door panel and trace the door motor wires. There should be 2 going to the switch. You can hook up a 12v power source direct to see if the motor is faulty before you remove it.If the window moves then replace the switch. If the window doesnt move then you will need to remove the motor, and push the window closed by hand.Keeping it up until you get a motor is simply by jamming a piece of cardboard between the window and door. Its not a permanent fix but it will keep it closed in case it rains.
