Expertise
Heretofore, I will NOT answer any mechanical question. I am not qualified and can only offer speculations. You are better served by others that are true Techs. With that being said, please only ask about parts and locating obsolete Auto Parts. Thank you. I have the ability to locate quite a few mechanical parts for American made vehicles fron the 1900`s to present. Some are OEM and some are aftermarket. This would include engine, brake and chassis parts. Body parts and trim are VERY difficult to find but you may inquire. If you need assistance in repair, I have illustrated books for major American manufacturers that show some illustrations BEFORE 1974. If needed, I can supply repair manuals for your specific vehicle. PLEASE REMEBER I'M A PARTS SPECIALIST, NOT A TECH!! Thank you.. Skip

Automotive - removal of door panel

Expert: Skip Bollinger - 1/1/2008

Question
I need to replace the outside door handle of a 2004 tracker but can not figure out how to remove the inner panel at the handle area.

Answer
Mark,
I'm a Parts Specialist, NOT a tech will offer these thoughts for your consideration.
You don't tell me which inner handle you are trying to remove, the window crank or the opening door handle so I'm just guessing here.
I'm not familiar with your vehicle so I'm just going to throw generalities at you. NORMALLY, the surround that goes around the handle to open the door is attached with screws. IF there are no screws, then it has plastic attaching hardware that are screwed into the back of the panel and have "fish hook barb" plastic piece that, once screwed into the inside of the panel, the barb piece is just pushed through an existing hole drilled into the inside of the door frame with the palm of your hand. This is a difficult piece to describe. KD Tool makes a panel removal tool that carries a part number 2822. Lisle also makes and it carries a part number 35400. These are used to remove the "fish barb" area of the attaching mechanism from the metal door frame. Once you get one out, you will see how it screws into the inside of the door panel. Like I said, it is difficult to describe.
IF it is the window crank handle (mechanical roll up windows) you are trying to remove, KD has a tool, part number 431 and the Lisle number is 18600. These tools will remove the "Omega" clip. It looks like the Greek letter Omega. A horse shoe shaped clip with feet.
In closing, I have seen some cars that have the attaching screw hidden behind the handle. You have to pull the handle away from the panel to expose the screw. This is only on the interior door opening handle. Has nothing to do with the window.
Mark, I hope this helps a bit. Please remember, I'm a Part Specialist, NOT a Tech. I don't work on cars.. I hope you have a safe and happy 2008.
