Question Hi- I have a 2001 Olds Alero. It has been having intermitten problems starting- sometimes it would work and sometimes not. Yesterday it wouldn't start after 2 hours of trying until we banged the starter with a long pole while turning the ignition. Therefore I thought I needed a new starter. So I replaced it today. It started up fine, but there's a new problem: first, there now seems to be a squeal coming from the starter area for a few seconds after the engine starts. I'm not too concerned about that since it dies away after a few seconds. But now the battery light on the dashboard comes on and won't go off. Could anything I had done with the starter affected the battery?
Answer I assume when you say it would not start, you mean the engine would not turn over. The solenoid will cause this and you seem to have solved that by replacing the starter, however. The noise i dont know what it would be but some cars have shims which must be replaced when you fit the starter so i am not sure about this model. The shims will already be in your car with the old starter and another thing is the number of teeth on the starter must be exactly the same as the old one.Thats one possibility. You may have fitted the wrong starter and its not engaging properly with the ring gear. The light on the dash for the battery sounds like a fault in the alternator so you will need to test the charge with a meter.Put the tester on the battery terminals and you should have a charge of approx 13.0.....14.0 volts if less than this then replace the alternator. You cannot fit the starter wiring incorrectly as most modern cars have plug ins.I assume this is the same on your car.Try to find the exact location of this squeal as it isnt good to have any kind of noise from the starter.
