Automotive - anti-freeze in engine oil pan

Expert: Ben Deutschman - 2/25/2008

Question
My mechanic tells me he found anti-freeze when he removed plug to change oil. I don't drive the truck that much maybe 500 miles a year a 1000 the most. what are my options? should I get second opinion?

Answer
How far you drive your Truck isn't important, the fact that you have Coolant in the Oil, is. The presence of Coolant in the Oil, generally means one of two things, either a bad Head Gasket, or a crack in the Engine Block. In either case, there is no cheap way out, the problem has to be taken care of. If it's Head Gaskets, then the Heads have to come off, the old Gaskets removed, and while the Heads are off, they ought to be freshened up (boiled, new Valve Guides as needed, etc). You can have another Mechanic check things out, just to make sure that there is indeed Coolant in the Oil, but if the answer comes back yes, then your options are fix it, or junk it.
