Question what kinds of problems occur with gradual internal coolant loss. About a month ago I had noticed coolant sensor warning light to add coolant. Jan 4/08 I took a oil sample- black but inside oil pressure cap tastes of antifreeze. Could I have serious problems and could I charge the expense to my insurance company because the car was in a severe car accident Oct/07 and once I had it returned this problem started. I'm filling the tank once a month and the engine has 55k on it. It's a 1500 Chev silverado 5.3 vortex engine
Answer It shouldnt have internal leaks with only 55k on the engine.Make sure there are no hose leaks first. If it is leaking internally,it will be either the head gasket/s or the intake manifold. It depends on what damage was done in the accident, and if the radiator was damaged its possible that there is a small leak not easily seen as you are filling the tank once a month.Get a pressure test done with a proper guage and you will see any leaks externally and if the guage holds the pressure or not.
