Automotive - Battery Indicator Stays Lightly Lit On Dash

Question
Hi,I have an 1993 Nissan Sentra 1.6 2 door in good running condition with 200,000+ miles.Bought it for my teen daughter so she can drive to school. She has had the car around 4 months and I have noticed during that time the battery led on the dash was always lit but then at other times would turn off for a day or two then light back up.
Well, battery finally died and I bought and expensive duralast. The light is still on to my surprise but I did have a thought of something electrical/mechanical not sure which direction.Checked the alternator although do not know where to go from there or if I did not do thorough check on alt.should I just buy an new one or should the problem be traced down? Is this expensive work? I have a mechanic that can brief it but wanted a little knowledge. I thank you in advance for any and all attention.

Answer
If tyhe alternator is goos it will put out about 14v at the battery while running.
if not you will only see bayyery 12v at the batt while running..check the votage.  some cars have volt meter in the dash..

also check to see if the alt belt is tight enough and in good shape.
should be easy to figure out..
Good luck..
