Automotive/power steering pump

QuestionQUESTION: I put a power steering pump in a 1993 suburu, and it still doesn't work. Did I do something wrong, is there anything i have to do to get it ready to go in.
Thanks Bob
ANSWER: When you say it doesnt work, how do you mean?Do you have no power steering or is there something wrong with the pump.Replacing the p/s pump is pretty simple.Remove the belt and the old pump.Install the new pump/belt and bleed all the air as directed with the instructions which should come with the new one. Also make sure the fluid tank is clean and the filter/screen on the bottom is clear.Best way is to remove the tank and totally clean it out with a good solvent.Ask in the parts store for some that isnt harmful to plastic.I have seen this screen blocked with dirt and it will prevent the fluid from circulating and hence the power steering will not work.I assume you are sure the pump was at fault and not the rack and pinion?Check all hoses also especially the pressure hose for leaks.

QUESTION: I did not bleed the pump, could you explain to me how.
Thanks, Bob
AnswerAssuming you have a clean system then the bleed procedure is,raise the front wheels off the ground, secure the rear wheels with a block and make sure the e brake is on.In park, start the car and fill the reservoir with p/s fluid to the max.Turn the steering all the way left and all the way right 20 times.Make sure the fluid level stays the same at max.Stop the engine and lower the wheels.Repeat the turns with engine running and wheels on the ground.Fill level to max and check there are no air bubbles in the tank. You should have power steering.Test drive the car and check the fluid again and for a few days to ensure there are no leaks.
