Automotive - 1985 dodge ram

Expert: Ben Deutschman - 4/22/2008

Question
im looking at a 1985 dodge ram with a 318, 2bbl carb, auto transmission, the body work has been done as well as the paint, new rims, the works, my buddies and i were wandering whether this would still have the 727, could you tell me whether this is still the 727 and if so could you tell me a little more about the truck and its drivetrain?

Answer
The 318's could have had either the A-904 Transmission, or if set up for Trailer Towing, or a Heavy Duty application, I believe the 727 was still an option in 1985. Your best bet I can think of for confirming what Transmission would have been available, would be to see if you can get a Haynes Manual for that Truck. It should at least show what the options for a Transmission were, and help you identify them. You could also go to a local Auto Parts Store, and ask them to look up a Transmission Filter Kit for that specific Truck. Advance Auto Parts (a.k.a. Kragen, Schucks and Checker), not to mention AutoZone, usually have a pictorial view of the gasket, and from the shape of the Gasket, you can match it up to the shape of the Pan on the Transmission, and determine what Trans it is the Truck has in it.
