Question We have been having trouble with our battery going dead while the car is not running. We charge it and then it starts but when it sits in the garage it goes dead again.
There are not lights on or door ajar or anything visible that could be draining the power. Any suggestions?
Answer Something as simple as an Alarm System, A Clock Memory Circuit, or Radio Memory Circuit, in a car that is used infrequently, can drain a Battery. Also, a Trunk Light that's not going out when the Trunk is closed, or an Underhood Light that stays on after the Hood is closed, will drain a Battery even faster. You could try removing the Bulb from either Light, and see if the problem goes away. Try one Light, if that doesn't change anything, then try the other Light. Once you've narrowed down which Light is the culprit, then you'll have to check the Switch that controls that Light. Most are controlled by either a Mercury Switch, mounted to the Hood or Trunk Lid, some use a Door Jam style Switch, mounted so that the Hood or Trunk opens the contact when either is closed.
