Heretofore, I will NOT answer any mechanical question. I am not qualified and can only offer speculations. You are better served by others that are true Techs. With that being said, please only ask about parts and locating obsolete Auto Parts. Thank you. I have the ability to locate quite a few mechanical parts for American made vehicles fron the 1900`s to present. Some are OEM and some are aftermarket. This would include engine, brake and chassis parts. Body parts and trim are VERY difficult to find but you may inquire. If you need assistance in repair, I have illustrated books for major American manufacturers that show some illustrations BEFORE 1974. If needed, I can supply repair manuals for your specific vehicle. PLEASE REMEBER I'M A PARTS SPECIALIST, NOT A TECH!! Thank you.. Skip

Question
Hi Skip
I bought an '81 chev dually camper van a few years back. The fellow I purchased it from had removed the a/c compressor to facilitate putting in a propane fuel system and didn't bother to put it back in. He gave me the compressor with hoses and bracket with bolts attached. I would like to revive the a/c and can't figure out how this thing goes back together.I suspect there is a part of the bracket missing and was wondering if you know where I could find a diagram showing the mounting brackets. Thanks,Rick

Answer
Rick,
Wow!! This is a tough one!! This van is 27 years old.
Okay, you are looking for a diagram of how the compressor mounts. All I can think of is to see if you can find a GM TRUCK dealership that may have some old Microfiche. (and a machine to look at them). That is the only place I can think of that may be able to help you..
If they look up a compressor, it may show a diagram as to it's relationship to the engine.
You don't state what size engine so I'm going to guess it has a 350. I'm not sure about a van but if memory serves me correctly, the compressor should mount off the front of the driver's side cylinder head above the power steering pump. There should be 3 bolt holes on the front of the head to mount the front bracket. Off the back of the compressor, there should be a bracket the goes up to the intake bolts.
Now IF I'm correct, this A/AC system has been open for a LONG time so you will have to replace the dryer. It has a descant bag in it to draw moisture out of the normally working system. It will be junk. You should also have the system professionally flushed to get all the dirt and debris that has gotten into the hoses, evaporator and condenser out of the system.
In closing, you might try your public library and look in the "Reference Section". They may have a book that shows the proximity of the A/C compressor. I doubt if they will have it but if a local GM dealer can't help, it is worth a look.
I'm sorry I couldn't have been more help but this is the best I can come up with. I hope is helps. Good luck...
