Automotive - 1990 Geo metro Sluggish between 1/4 and 3/4 throttle

Expert: Sean Halliday - 9/17/2008

Question
QUESTION: I have just purchased a 1990 geo motro the has been parked for the past year.  It was parked after the hood opened while driveing and crushed the windshield.  The car was parked with 1/2 a tank of fuel.
I have tuned it up, New plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor, 1/2 a can sea foam in the throttle body, filled the supply fuel line with sea foam to clean the injector, and the rest in the gas tank, 1 bottle of HEAT water absorber in the fuel tank, and added 4 gallons of fresh 91 octane fuel to top off the tank.
I have also removed the exhaust and blow air thru it from my wet dry vac blower port and it flows fine.

However after all this it is still sluggish when i move the throttle between 1.4 and 3/4.  When i keep it in the below 1/4 range it runs fine and i can run all rpms by not shifting with out issue.
When i go past this TP it stubles and losses power.
When i go wide open it stumbles but then picks up and runs fine until i let it off wide open throttle.  Any suggestions?
Also i have the check engine light on and it is for the O2 sensors which is on order and should be installed today.

ANSWER: Change the sensors and then see if it improves the performance.

QUESTION: I have changed the sensor, and followed the instruction in the haynes book to reset it but it still has the same check engine code and light.  I have ohmed out the wire fron the sensor all the way to the module under my dask and the wire is good.
The reset procedure was to uplug the battery negative termanal.  Any advice?

ANSWER: If its an aftermarket sensor it may not reset. There are usually 2 bank 1 sensor 1 and bank 2 sensor 2.The one before the cat and one after, how many on your car? What is the exact code?

QUESTION: The o2 sensor is a bosch.  My vehicle only has 1 o2 sensor.  the exact code is 13.  Please reply...Thank you in advance

Answer
The bad running and the fact the car sat for a year are a clue.Fuel that sits that long is going to emulsify, smells like old paint, and the sensor is detecting a bad condition in the engine as such. The fuel will need drained and possibly the injectors may need removed or the car run for many miles to clear the old fuel. The tank can be gummed up also.I have seen cars that have sat for this long and have needed a lot of work to get running correctly. The fuel additives in the modern gas are not meant to sit for a long time. So,more cleaning and possibly a long period of driving may solve this problem of poor running. You should not have added more fuel to the bad that was in the tank and my suggestion is remove all of it.Remove the intake and injectors and clean all of them.Any other parts that come in contact with the fuel will need cleaned and putting cleaner in the system will not remove the varnish build up.
