Automotive - Heater Core

Expert: Sean Halliday - 9/19/2008

Question
I have a 2005 Nissan Frontier LE. The other day I heard what sounded like water running near the right side of the dashboard. I did not see any water leaking anywhere. I did check the radiator and seen where the fluid was low, so I added fluid and the water running sound seems to have dissappeared. I have not seen any fluid leak puddles under the truck from the radiator. What caused the fluid to get low and was that makeing the water running sound thru the heater Core.  Thank You

Answer
If the coolant isnt leaking into the cabin, its nothing to worry about. Most cars will gurgle in the heater core when the coolant is a little low because the engine will take most of the coolant to stay cool. The coolant in any car will get low after so many miles due to evap process. All cars will do this. The normal loss would be about 1 qt per 6 months in the summer.
