Question
How do I install am ignition switch on a 1986 Dodge Ram D150?

Answer
I'm assuming you have a standard Column mounted Switch, and you are talking about the actual Switch, and not the 'Lock Cylinder' where the key goes. If it is the Switch, they are usually located along the Column, in line with the Lock Cylinder, and connected by either a Rod, or other type of Linkage. The method of securing varies, in that some are held by Screws, others by Hex Head Bolts. Some use proprietary 'Anti-Theft' style screws, and in those cases, you may have to carefully use a Dremel, with a 'Cut-Off Wheel', to cut a slot in the Screw Head, so you can use a regular Screwdriver to remove the Screws. You will have to unplug the Harness from the Switch, and then disengage the Rod, or other Mechanism from the Switch, in order to remove the Switch.

The Lock Cylinder is usually removed by accessing a hole above the Lock Cylinder. In order to access this Hole, you will have to remove any decorative Cover that is over the Switch, and then with a piece of hardened steel Rod, push the Pin in through the Access hole, while pulling outward on an inserted Key, that has been turned to the On position. MAKE SURE you've disconnected the Battery first, so as to avoid accidently starting the Vehicle. The new Lock Cylinder should just snap in place, as long as the gear it fits into, is properly aligned with the piece on the Lock Cylinder that fits into it.

A Haynes, or Chilton's Manual, will give you more detailed instructions on the job, and you may be able to get one of these books at an Autozone, Advance, Pep Boys, or smaller local Auto Parts Store, even for a 1986 Model Truck.
