QUESTION: Hi there,
I recently imported a Nissan 180sx from Japan. Unfortunately since I got it, over two months ago, I haven't been able to drive it as the engine doesn't seem to be running right. The engine is running too rich and is very farty and jumpy. I was told to get a new air flow meter and it would be fine but after buying the new part and fitting it, it hasn't made any difference. I am hoping for your opinion on what it could be! Please help!

ANSWER: How do you know its running rich?Is the check engine light on?I assume you have did the usual tune up things such as plugs,wires,filters.The o2 sensor will have a lot to do with the mixture .Check the fuel regulator isnt leaking fuel into the vacuum system.

QUESTION: I got someone to look at that and still no joy. No the engine check light isnt on. It is running rich because there is too much fuel going into it and the sump was full of petrol. Could it have anything to do with the position of the throttle switch?

That sounds like the fuel pressure regulator.Look at it and see if there is fuel leaking into the vacuum system by removing the rubber vacuum tube from the regulator.Engine running,it should not leak fuel.Throttle body doesnt cause this.Its ungoverned fuel going straight into the engine.Do a check on the vacuum system also for leaks.Especially at the intake manifold.Check all injectors for leaks.Test each one individually.
