Question
Is it doable to replace a 2.5 engine with a 2.2 engine in a 1996 subaru legacy outback wagon?  If so, is there anything I should be aware of?

Answer
I wouldnt think so as the wiring and transmission will be different. The vin # is for a purpose and if the engine you are replacing does not match, you can have all kinds of trouble. All kinds of things can be done with a car if you have a shop and the tools to do it but modifying a factory spec with a upgrade is costly. Why not tune up the 2.5 or replace it with the proper engine.
