Question
the car will turn over but it will not start, battery and starter are both new, have tried starter fluid, have checked connections twice, it is getting gas can smell.  have tried hitting the bottom of the gas tank while turning it over,

Answer
Not a good idea to use starter fluid,it can damage your engine so do not use it.The problem is either spark or fuel and the only way to find out is first have the fuel pressure tested with a proper gauge. Then look at the spark plugs and see if they spark when the engine is cranked over. You can do this by removing one wire from any plug and insert a spare plug in the wire.Earth the wire/plug to the engine and crank over,do not touch the plug while cranking or you will get a shock. If no spark, look at the ignition system usually the crank sensor is a number 1 cause on this car,so,hope this helps you .
