Automotive/heater mold smell

Question
My 2003 toyota Matrix has begun to emit a mold-like odor intermittently when the heater is on(which is most of the time where I live).I have mold allergies and it is making me sick. What can I do?

Answer
It is coming from the a/c drier/evaporator.This is a common problem but usually with older cars.Check for coolant leakage inside the car before anything is done on the a/c.The drier/evap may have to be replaced. Also, make sure the a/c drain is not blocked.Any work on the system will have to be done by a qualified tech,so ask him when you take the car to look at the drain first, sometimes it can get blocked up and cause a mold smell.
