Automotive/Rusting

Question
I was in a small accident that left a small dent near the front of my car and the paint came off that spot completely and the metal as begun to rust. My mechanic suggested something in a spray can that costs maybe $2.00 or so that I could keep applying when it is not raining to clean the rust off and keep it from rusting as badly. Do you have any idea of what it could have been, or do you have any suggestions of what could work? Thanks.

Answer
Procedure for painting is in most manuals but its basically, sand the area and apply primer, then sand primer and paint the area. The paint comes in aerosols at the parts store or you can have it professionally done at a body shop.Nail varnish is good for keeping out rust.I think your mechanic meant primer.
