Question
We have an 85 GMC S15 it started making a whinig noise then a noise like two blades grinding later on we were driving and only second gear would not make the noise. It was in fourth gear and locked up the truck spun out. Is it the u joints or the transmission?

Answer
U-Joints don't lock up, they fly apart, as do CV Joints in a 4-Wheel Drive. Transmissions could lock up, but generally that is do to catastrophic failure, such as a gear losing teeth, and the pieces being large enough to jam things up. Usually though, most catastrophic failures result in a loss of mobility, not anything jamming.
