p.s. i also just had new struts, brake pads, and rotors put on the front end.  could this have set something off?

Answer
This is a seperate problem and nothing to do with the brakes. The release for the shifter is probably worn or faulty. It may be the cable is broken. This will need to be repaired by a shop as it will involve removing the steering column possibly, and middle consol.Brake lights could be either the switch or the bulbs are bad.
