Question I have a 97 camry 4 cyl and it overheated and shut off. What was possibly damaged from excessive overheating. The car sounds like the timing is off (the engine sputters and shakes after firing through 3 cyl and the fourth cylinder is where the problem lies. I'm unable to track down the possible damage. I'm an electrician and a novice mechanic. Any advise ???
Answer Since most all Engine Blocks these days are cast Aluminum, it is very likely you blew a Head Gasket when the Engine overheated. Unlike the much sturdier cast Iron Blocks of years ago, Aluminum Block Engines, absolutely will not tolerate any amount of prolonged overheating, without some damage.
