Automotive - Distributor Removal

Question
1984 Dodge Pickup Can I just pull the distributor out to work on it and put it back in with the rotor pointing the same direction as when it came out without having any other problems? I've only worked on Ford and Chevy V-8s in the past. Wondered if there was going to be a trick to doing it on a slant 6 Dodge?  Thanks

Answer
There's no great trick to pulling a Distributor out of a Slant-Six engine. The most important thing, just like with any other Engine, is to have a good point of reference for lining up the Rotor. The best bet, is to line the Rotor up with the #1 Tower on the Distributor Cap, which can be accomplished by noting what point on the body of the Distributor, the Cap Tower lines up with, making a noticeable 'Witness Mark', and then with the Cap off, getting the Rotor lined up with that mark. Also, be careful not to just yank on the Distributor when removing it, or you'll damage the Nylon 'Drive Gear.' Be careful when reinstalling the Distributor, not to allow the Rotor to turn out of synch with the 'Witness Mark.' You may have to play with the Distributor a bit as you reinstall it, in order to determine what the best position for the Rotor is, just prior to meshing the Distributor 'Drive Gear', with the 'Worm' on the Camshshaft.
