Question Hey ben
I have a 97 ford escort sedan 4 cyl with 104,853 miles on it. my escort just got a tune up on it about 4, or 5 months ago and after that service engin soon light came on so i took it to auto zone to get it scaned to see what it was and they said my EGR is probably cloged or need to be replaced. so i ve been driving it and it acts like it doesnt want to go like it has no power. so a couple days later its making a clicking noise and it loud . so i put oil in it and it still does it? i looked under my car and there is oil every where. my dad thinks it blew a rod but i dont. could it be my EGR ? if it blew a rod how much will that cost to get it fixed. please reply back A.S.A.P
THANK YOU!
Answer If the Code came up EGR, then I would say that, yes, it was bad. The other problem you described, was unrelated to the EGR, and from what you write, it sounds like your Dad is right on the money.
Your car may have been burning Oil, which in turn caused sludge to build up in the EGR Valve. However, allowing the Oil level to get too low, may have done serious damage to the Engine in your car, and now, the EGR is the least of your worries. I'm afraid, as I stated above, your Dad is right, you've seriously damaged a Rod, possibly to the point that it broke, and put a hole in the Engine Block. The Engine is now shot.
