Automotive/Timing on a 1987 Dodge van

Question
I have a 1987 Dodge van D150 with a slant six. How do you do the timing on this motor.

Answer
First, find the rotating mark on the bottom Pulley closest to the 'Timing Case Cover, (you may have to use some quick hits of the 'Start Position' on your 'Ignition Switch' in order to turn the Pulley, and get the 'Rotating Timing Mark' to where you can see it). Once your find the 'Rotating Timing Mark', mark it with a bright colored 'Grease Pen' or similar type of marker. Then, based on what your Engine Decal, or
Shop Manual tells you is correct, also mark the corresponding 'Timing Mark' on the 'Stationary Pointer' above the 'Bottom Pulley.' Then, disconnect and plug the 'Vacuum Advance Hose' going to the 'Distributor Vacuum Advance.' Next, loosen the Bolt on the 'Distributor Hold-Down Tab', just enough to allow you to turn the 'Distributor', but NOT so loose the 'Distributor' turns freely. Hook your 'Timing Light to the proper terminals on the Battery, and to Number 1 'Spark Plug Wire.' Make sure your 'Timing Light Leads' are clear of any sources of Heat, or moving Pulleys, and then start the engine, and while aiming your 'Timing Light' at the 'Stationary Timing Mark', turn the Distributor until the rotating, and stationary 'Timing Marks' line up. Tighten the 'Distributor 'Hold-Down Bolt', recheck your timing, and if the marks still line up, you're done. If the 'Timing Marks' are not lined up after your tighten the 'Distributor Hold-Down Bolt', you'll have to loosen it again, and reset the 'Timing.' Just be casreful not to move the 'Distributor' when your retighten the 'Hold-Down Bolt' again. Last, don't forget to reconnect the 'Vacuum Advance Hose' to the 'Distributor Vacuum Advance.' Most important, make sure you have your vehicle fully warmed up, and at its normal idle speed before trying to set the 'Timing.' Don't forget to unhook your 'Timing Light' when you're done.
