Automotive/auto EGR ?

QuestionQUESTION: Hey Sean. I have a 1985 Audi 5000 S - 2.2 lt. - non turbo - auto tranny.
Where is the EGR valve located at and what does it look like ? I failed the NOx on emissions though everything else checked out great.
I'm guessing that this might be the problem but my Haynes manual .. isn't a lot of help in supplying a clear location of that particular part. Are there other parts associated with the NOx that I can clean or replace ?
Thanks much, Will
ANSWER: The NOX is usually your catalytic convertor. If you go to google and then rock autoparts, type in your make and model then you will see what it looks like,,hope youre sitting down because theyre 476$,,,,,,,so i would make sure your egr valve is faulty before i buy it.It will tell you in your manual how to test the EGR valve.A good smog staion should have helped you by telling you if your cat is bad or not.If the car has high mileage ,then thats a condition which doesnt help the NOX ,,but 99 out of 100 cars i have seen are always bad cataltyic convertors.

QUESTION: Got another one for you Sean. My 1985 Audi 5000 S non turbo automatic transmission acts .. strange.
Upon initial start up, the gear doesn't kick in till it's gone about a mile or so.
Ex: At 35 mph, the tach registers 2800 rpms. After the car 'warms up' and goes about a mile, then it will kick in and drop to the normal 2200 rpms. This ONLY occurs upon the first mile of the day. It works great after that. The automatic shifts just as it's supposed to.. less I turn off the car and let it cool down.
Last year, I would go about 3 miles or so before it would kick in to the next gear. It's gotten better but still am curious what is causing this to happen.
Previous owner, who I lost contact with, said that a new transmission was installed so..I changed the screen, filter , gasket and fluid to the correct measure.
What the heck gives with this ?
Thanks, Will
AnswerAudi 5000 transmission is a problem ,as i drove one and it did the same thing except it got worse..The transmission sounds like it is old and worn but if the previous owner replaced it then im thinking its possibly in need of adjustment or service. As i dont do any work on trannys i would take it to a good transmission guy and let him drive it or look at it.
