spark plugs distrib cap"

what else could account for such sputterin or engine sprintin spurting?

or electrical ?

Answer
If the gasoline does not have enough Octane, as specified in the Vehicle's 'Owner's Manual', then pre-detonation, or 'Knocking' occurs when a load is placed on the vehicle's engine (as in accelarating from a dead stop). The sound you hear, is caused by a samll portion of the fuel/air mixture igniting before the Spark Plug fires. When this happens, the flame from the first source of ignition, collides with the one from the secondary source (the Spark Plug), and that causes the rattling sound referred to as knocking, or pinging.

Your problem does not sound like simple Spark Knock, but more like a fuel delivery problem, due to maybe a bad 'Fuel Pump', or bad 'Injector.' A good Mechanic, with the proper diagnostic equipment, could zero in on the exact cause.
