Question
My car will turn over and attempt to run, but will cut off when I release the key from start position.  I think I need an new ignition switch.  What is involved in installing a new switch?

Answer
Ken,
I'm a Parts Professional, NOT a Tech but here goes.. I agree with you. It does sound like the ignition switch has gone bad. Typical symptom. I'm not sure what brand you are going to buy but it should be one of the following:
Motocraft #  SW2474
Borg Warner # CS96
Standard Ign. # US98
You must be living right. I'm a Parts Pro, remember?? The LATEST repair manual I have is 1989. It was published by Motors and it states:
"On 1989 models with airbag restraint system, battery ground cable must be disconnected and isolated before performing this procedure. Failure to do so may result in accidental deployment and personal injury.
1.  Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.  For tilt wheel only, remove upper column extension shroud by unsnapping from retaining clip at 9 o'clock position.
3.  Remove steering column trim shrouds.
4.  Disconnect ignition switch electrical connector. Turn the lock cylinder to the "On" position.
5.  With a 1/8" drill, drill out the switch retaining bolt heads. Then, remove the bolts with and "Easy Out" or equivalent.
6.  Disengage ignition switch from actuator and remove from vehicle, Fig. 1.
7.  Adjust ignition switch by sliding the carrier to the switch "On" position. A replacement ignition switch will be pre-set in the "On" position.
8.  Ensure the lock cylinder is in approximately the "On" position and install the ignition switch onto the actuator pin.
9.  Install switch break-off head mounting bolts and tighten until heads shear.
10.  Reconnect switch electrical connector and battery ground cable. Check the ignition switch for proper operation in all switch positions. Be sure the column is locked in the lock position.
11.  Reinstall shrouds."

Obviously the above mumbo jumbo is for the legal eagles or turkeys, your preference.
Ken, I hope this helps. You and your family have a safe and happy Holiday Season.

Heretofore, I will NOT answer any mechanical question. I am not qualified and can only offer speculations. You are better served by others that are true Techs. With that being said, please only ask about parts and locating obsolete Auto Parts. Thank you. I have the ability to locate quite a few mechanical parts for American made vehicles fron the 1900`s to present. Some are OEM and some are aftermarket. This would include engine, brake and chassis parts. Body parts and trim are VERY difficult to find but you may inquire. If you need assistance in repair, I have illustrated books for major American manufacturers that show some illustrations BEFORE 1974. If needed, I can supply repair manuals for your specific vehicle. PLEASE REMEBER I'M A PARTS SPECIALIST, NOT A TECH!! Thank you.. Skip
