QUESTION: i have vw quantum 1987 5 cyl..
the car starts only when i jump star with a charger 200 amp setting..other wise i crank it with only the battery and it just cranks but does not star...please help.
ANSWER: Does the car turn over ok without the charger?Or does it turn very slow?

QUESTION: NO IT TURNS GOOD NO WEAKNES LIKE IT WANT TO START..
BUT LIKE I SAY WE THE CHARGER IT STARTS RIGHT UP...
Probable cause is low compression.When you hit it with the charger its turning the engine much faster and hence ups the compression.I would do a compression check on all cylinders and see what they read.Also can be poor valve seal or burned seats.Good compression is around 110psi per cylinder.I assume there are a lot of miles on the engine being 1987?
