Automotive Plastics - plastic door guard trim

Expert: Octavio Torres - 8/18/2008

Question
The piece of trim along the door on the outside of my Acura has been pulled away and needs to be reattached using some sort of epoxy.  Any recommendations?

Answer
Hi Al,If the trim or molding is not twisted  outwards,I would use the adhesive Sikaflex 221. it is a Polyurethane formula that takes some 48 hours to set but once done is very, very strong. If we are dealing with a PVC & metal core trim, we are in trouble. Most trims of this kind are not repairable although you may fix a slight bend with your hands by taking the whole piece off. You may also use a double sided adhesive tape from 3M. for both cases, make sure to get rid of any grease, dust or debris with Varsol before using any adhesive.
